2017 is going to be a great year for books. Maybe a not-so-great year for my bank account but you have to take your wins where you can get them, right? One of my 2017 reading goals is to read more diversely, especially #OwnVoices books, and so the fact that there are so many great diverse books coming out next year has me super excited. Today, I am going to be sharing 15 of the books that I am most anticipating, both so I can cry about the injustice of having to wait even more months to read them but also to help kickstart your 2017 TBR!
HISTORY IS ALL YOU LEFT ME
Adam Silvera
Release date: January 17th 2017
There is no better way to start off the year than by reading a book that has been guaranteed to break my heart, rip out my soul and leave me utterly devastated, right? I have heard a lot of great things about Adam Silvera and although I am yet to read More Happy Than Not, I am definitely picking this book up when it comes out.
EMPRESS OF A THOUSAND SKIES
Rhoda Belleza
Release Date: February 7th 2017
Not only am I big fan of the “royalty” trope in books, I am also a sucker for a good space adventure and so this book called to me at first sight (literally, because look at that cover <3). Promising a great cast of diverse characters and marketed for fans of The Lunar Chronicles – this book is one that I am going to be scrambling to get me hands on.
THE HATE U GIVE
Angie Thomas
Release Date: February 28th 2017
When a book has it’s film rights sold even before publication, you know it’s going to be good. The Hate U Give follows Starr as she deals with the aftermath of watching her unarmed childhood friend die by police gunfire right in front of her eyes. Not only does this book deal with the harrowing racial divide in America but also explores family, friends, love and so much more – it is definitely one of my most anticipated releases for 2017.
THE INEXPLICABLE LOGIC OF MY LIFE
Benjamin Alire Sáenz
Release Date: March 7th 2017
In true Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s style, this book promises a coming-of-age story with PoC and LGBTQ+ elements, reminiscent of the hugely popular Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of The Universe. I am so ready to delve into another beautifully written and emotionally impactful story by Sáenz and I counting down the days until I can get my hands on this book.
QUEENS OF GEEK
Jen Wilde
Release Date: March 14th 2017
Queens of Geek follows 3 best friends as they go to SupaCon, expecting to have a good time but not exactly expecting to have their lives changed forever. Featuring bisexual and Autistic representation plus PoC main characters, this book is definitely one to keep on your radar – especially since the pre-release reviews have been insanely positive.
A CROWN OF WISHES
Roshani Chokshi
Release Date: March 28th 2017
I tried not to include sequels on this list but The Star Touched Queen was such a fantastic book that I had to include the second book in the duology. Roshani Chokshi flawlessly intertwined Indian folklore with the Hades/Persephone myth in the first book to create such a beautiful story (if you haven’t read it – go do it right now!) and I am excited to see what she has in store for A Crown of Wishes.
THE GAUNTLET
Karuna Riazi
Release Date: March 28th 2017
I don’t generally read a lot of Middle Grade fiction but this one sounded WAAAYYY too good to pass up. The Gauntlet is described as “Jumanji with a Middle Eastern twist” and the synopsis makes the book sound fascinating, fast-paced and just a little bit terrifying all at the same time.
THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED
Becky Albertalli
Release Date: April 11th 2017
After the brilliance that was Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, I am expecting great things from Becky Albertalli’s second book and I’m sure she won’t disappoint. This book seems as delightful as Simon, and features body diversity, F/F romances and a “chubby Tolkien superfan” which is basically all you need to know.
FLAME IN THE MIST
Renee Ahdieh
Release Date: May 2nd 2017
Renee Ahdieh proved that she was fabulous at retellings by her fantastic The Wrath and The Dawn duology so I have no doubt that this Mulan retelling, set in Feudal Japan, is going to be just as amazing. Plus that cover is just absolutely BEAUTIFUL so Bookstagram pictures, here I come.
IT’S NOT LIKE IT’S A SECRET
Misa Sugiura
Release Date: May 9th 2017
A cute contemporary with an F/F interracial romance (WHICH I AM LIVING FOR) that follows Sana Kiyohara as she tries to deal with all the secrets in her life – some that she hasn’t even come to terms with herself. This sounds like a fast read, however one that has some hard-hitting emotional moments as well and I’m excited to pick it up for myself!
THE LOVE INTEREST
Cale Dietrich
Release Date: May 16th 2017
I’m not going to lie, the main reasons why I am so excited for this book is because a) it’s about spies and b) it has such a fantastic romance. Two spies, one trained to be the “bad boy” and the other the “good guy”, go on a mission together and instead of falling for the girl they were assigned to, they fall for each other? I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS MISSING FROM MY LIFE UNTIL NOW.
WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI
Sandhya Menon
Release Date: May 30th 2017
Dimple doesn’t know how she feels about the whole “arranged marriage” route and is instead focusing on the exciting internship she has planned – little does she know, her parents have other plans. A cute romance, great family dynamics, positive perspectives on arranged marriages – what else could you want?
I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE
Maurene Goo
Release Date: May 30th 2017
Can you believe that I used to not be a fan of cute contemporaries and half of this list is just that? I Believe in A Thing Called Love sounds like an absolutely adorable story following Desi as she tries to apply romance lessons learnt from K-dramas to snag her crush – something she thought would be straight forward until she learns that real life is rarely that simple.
WANT
Cindy Pon
Release Date: 13th June 2017
If you couldn’t already tell by the cover, Want is a science fiction novel that follows Jason Zhou as he infiltrates Jin Corp – the company responsible for most of the corruption in his society – in an attempt to save his city and get revenge on the people who killed his mother. However plans change as he finds himself falling in love with the CEO’s daughter and I JUST NEED THIS BOOK IN MY LIFE.
THE LIBRARY OF FATES
Aditi Khorana
Release Date: July 18th 2017
I am such a sucker for South Asian mythology-inspired fantasies so this book is right up my alley. Marketed for lovers of The Star-Touched Queen and The Wrath and the Dawn (which, from this list, you know I loved), The Library of Fates tells the tale Princess Amrita as she goes on a journey to find a fabled library (!!!), following her as she tries to change her fate, restore the life she lost and find new love.
Those are the diverse reads I’m most looking forward to next year! Let me know what you most anticipated 2017 diverse books are down below!
Until next time,
So many great choices! I just added basically all of them to my wishlist, if they weren’t on there to begin with. 2017 is going to be an expensive year. 😀
